While Bollywood and Tollywood has seen several big-ticket films arrive with much hullaballoo in 2022, but sink without a trace in theatres, the landscape has been quite different for Tamil cinema. Several big Tamil film industry stars’ movies like those of Kamal Haasan, Ajith, Suriya and more arrived with a bang at the box office this year and more than justified their big budgets and star-driven aura. Suriya’s Etharkkum Thunindhavan is the third highest grossing Tamil movie of 2022 at ₹170 crore gross, but again, just managed a hit verdict due to its exorbitant budget and bare-minimum profit ratio even though they weren’t any pandemic-associated delays. Sivakarthikeyan’s Don is the fourth highest grossing Tamil film of 2022 at ₹110 crore gross, and a superhit despite a smaller gross as compared to the aforementioned movies, owing to its lesser budget.
Dhanush’s Thiruchitrambalam is still in its early days in theatres, but is already on its way to being a clean hit due to a great start, where it has already grossed ₹18.28 crore in Tamil Nadu alone in just 2 days.
