Ex-New York Yankees outfielder Mike Tauchman has signed a $1-million deal to play in South Korea, according to a report.
The Sockman just got paid.
Former Yankees outfielder Mike Tauchman has taken a $1-million deal to play for the Hanwha Eagles of the Korean Baseball Organization, according to a report from Twitter user @jhpae117, who writes about South Korean baseball. (Hat tip to fellow reporter Sung Min Kim.)
Tauchman has played parts of five seasons in the majors, three of them with the Yankees.
He came up with the Colorado Rockies, who sent him to the Bronx before the start of the 2019 season, when he broke out and hit .277 with 13 homers and 47 RBI in 87 games. Many have speculated that Tauchman’s sudden power surge was related to the juiced baseball that the league used that season.
The Yankees traded him to the San Francisco Giants early in 2021 in exchange for reliever Wandy Peralta, and Tauchman played in 64 games for San Francisco, hitting .178. Tauchman is considered one of the better defensive outfielders in the game, however.
Tauchman became a free agent Oct. 13.
Tauchman is a career .231 hitter in the majors with a .704 OPS in 257 games.
The 31-year-old Tauchman likely sees the stint in South Korea as a chance to make immediate money — perhaps more than he would have made in the majors had he waited to sign after the lockout ends. He could also parlay a good showing into a more lucrative deal back in the U.S. when he’s finished in Korea.
