Speak Now
This is not a good time for Bollywood. Films we had high expectations from are turning out to become box office duds. To top it all, the boycott trend on social media is getting stronger with time. After boycott calls trended on social media for Laal Singh Chaddha, Pathaan and Tiger 3, several industry giants spoke about the matter. Vivek Agnihotri, who helmed one of the few highest-grossing films in Bollywood this year, spoke about the boycott trend.
Vivek Agnihotri helmed The Kashmir Files, which was one of the few films to cross the Rs 250 crore mark in Bollywood. Amid India’s ‘Boycott Bollywood’ trend, Vivek recalled the times when The Kashmir Files was boycotted but the film steadily picked up. At an event, the filmmaker spoke about the boycott trend. He said, “Boycott karna ek individual right hai. Hum feminist, adivasi, animal rights ki baat karte hai toh. So, I think boycotting anything is an individual right. But the thing is, yeh boycott ki situation aayi kyu?”
Vivek further continued, “Aisa hi ki jaise koi toothpaste bechne wali company, colgate, for example, agar woh apne hi customers ka mazak udane lage, aur bole ki jo toothpaste use karte hai woh toh sab idiots hai. Toh aap kitne din tak woh toothpaste khareedenge? Toh yeh thoda introspect ki baat hai ki aaj kya kaaran hai ki yeh situation aayi hai.”
Vivek Agnihotri went on to recall the time when The Kashmir Files was banned by Bollywood, but since his film was ‘honest’ it performed well at the box office. He shared at the same event, “Boycott bahut filmon ka hota hai. (The) Kashmir Files ka poore Bollywood ne, critics ne, media ne, exhibitors ne, sab ne hi boycott kar diya tha. But if your film is honest… duniya ki koi takat usse rok nahi sakti.”
The Kashmir Files had released on March 11, 2022.
