A netizen posted on social media that his friend’s son will leave for Cambodia next week, claiming to work for DBS Bank’s new branch there. Given the recent cases of Taiwanese being trafficked to Southeast Asian countries, he hoped to publicly ask the bank to check on the authenticity.
The post read that his friend’s son claimed that DBS set up a new branch in Cambodia and hired him to work there. “The company has booked a flight for him to fly next week.”
He found it suspicious and asked DBS on LinkedIn but did not receive any reply.
As the departure date approached, the worried netizen eventually chose to post the issue and publicly ask DBS, “Is it that there is a new office in Cambodia, and you need to hire someone in Hong Kong to work there?”
The post soon went viral online, and many citizens suspected it to be a trap, “DBS is a Singaporean company, they would hire Singaporeans even though there was a new branch. Why would they recruit Hong Kong people for no reason?”
“He is heading to Cambodia at this moment? Is it some kind of those Taiwan scams that claims to offer HK$100,000 a month?”
Some others suggest the netizen call DBS directly to inquire, “Why don’t you call DBS? It’s such a big company, and you will find their HR.” “Did he sign a contract at DBS head office? Why don’t you call the bank’s Hong Kong office to ask?”
According to the official website of DBS Bank, branches in Asia include Singapore, Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, and Dubai, but there is no mention of a new branch in Cambodia.
The Facebook page later posted a picture of someone messaging the DBS Facebook account to ask whether there is a new branch in Cambodia, whereas the reply read that there is no branch there.
